Caption

Israel is a young country with a long history. The sculpture represents two figures engaged in a desperate struggle that could represent the century's long effort to create a Jewish homeland in the midst of a sea of enemies, and the simultaneous struggle to maintain the moral compass that guides us. This was Ilan's largest sculpture at the time, dedicated to an event that justified the effort. Like much public art particularly in Israel, this sculpture references a historic event that many feel must not fade from consciousness lest it occur again.
